Yes, you are required to undergo a background check to purchase ammunition in California.  Buying ammo in CA generally requires a face-to-face, in-person transaction where your information must match the state's database.

• Requirements: You must present a valid California Driver’s License or Identification Card (a Real ID is recommended).
• Checks: The system checks if you are in the Automated Firearms System (AFS).
  • Standard ($1): For those with a gun already registered with the CA DOJ.
  • Basic ($19): For those not in the system, which may take longer.
• Online Sales: Generally, ammunition cannot be shipped directly to your home; it must be shipped to a licensed dealer for a background check.

To buy a gun in California, you must be a resident 21 years of age, have a valid 

Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC), present a valid California driver’s license/ID (REAL ID  preferred), pass a background check, undergo a mandatory 10-day waiting  period, and provide proof of residency for handguns.

• Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC): You must pass a written test (75% or higher) at a licensed firearm dealership to obtain an FSC, which is valid for 5 years.
• Identification: A valid California Driver’s License or Identification Card  (non-expired) is required. If your ID says "Federal Limits Apply," you will need additional documentation, such as a birth certificate or passport.
• Proof of Residency (Handguns Only): You must provide a valid document showing your current address, such as  a utility bill, car registration, or signed lease/rental agreement,  issued within the last 90 days.
• Waiting Period & Background Check: A 10-day waiting period is mandatory for all firearm purchases to allow for a background check.
• Safe Handling Demonstration: You must demonstrate safe handling of the firearm at the dealer. firearm handling
